What We Do
At Kentucky Food Ministry, we are deeply committed to providing emergency food assistance to those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in downtown Lexington. Every Friday, our dedicated team of volunteers prepares and delivers around 100 meals by walking through the streets, personally connecting with those in need. Our goal is to meet people where they are—offering more than just food, but also a sense of dignity and care. Each meal consists of a sandwich, cookies or chips, water, and a granola bar, all thoughtfully prepared and packed by our volunteers. We also provide a list of referrals to local services to help individuals access additional resources.
As we look to grow, consistency is our priority. We believe that with more community involvement, we can expand beyond just one day a week. This year, our goal is to distribute 2,400 meals and partner with at least ten businesses, churches, or community groups to support our efforts. By forming these partnerships, we can ensure that our outreach is dependable and that we can reach more people on a regular basis.
The heart of our work lies in our volunteers, whose generosity and dedication make everything we do possible. We invite you or your organization to join us in this mission. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most, offering not only meals but also hope and support to our neighbors in need.
Our Mission
Our mission is to offer sustenance to those in need, both in terms of physical nourishment and spiritual support. We do not simply dispense meals; we provide a beacon of hope, an outpouring of care, and unwavering support to the individuals we are privileged to serve.
Our outreach extends beyond the act of distributing food. We immerse ourselves in meaningful conversations, sharing the Gospel, and offering the hand of friendship to those whom society may have overlooked or marginalized. In doing so, we draw inspiration from the scriptures, particularly Matthew 25:35-36, which teaches us, "For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me."
In alignment with this sacred teaching, we wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of building relationships, demonstrating Christ's love, and showing compassion. Just as Jesus reached out to the most vulnerable and marginalized in society, we strive to be vessels of His grace and bring light into the lives of those we serve.
Our Statement of Faith
The Holy Trinity: We confess our faith in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the Holy Trinity. We affirm that God the Father is the Creator of all, that Jesus Christ the Son is our Savior, and that the Holy Spirit empowers and guides us in our mission.
The Divine Creation of Humanity: We wholeheartedly affirm the sacred truth that every individual is created in the image of God, as stated in Genesis 1:27. We deeply respect and honor the inherent dignity and worth of every person, irrespective of their life circumstances or backgrounds.
Christ's Commandment to Love: We embrace the fundamental commandment of Jesus to love our neighbors as ourselves, as articulated in Matthew 22:39. Our ministry's foundation is rooted in the profound principle of extending Christ's love and compassion to all, particularly to those who find themselves vulnerable or in need.
Meeting Physical and Spiritual Needs: We firmly believe in tending to both the physical and spiritual needs of those whom we serve. Just as Jesus fed the hungry and offered living water to the thirsty, our mission is to provide sustenance not only for the body but also for the soul.
Compassion and Justice: We ardently commit to the cause of social justice and advocate for those who are marginalized and oppressed. Our ministry acts as a voice for the voiceless, recognizing advocacy as a vital expression of our Christian witness.
Stewardship of Resources: We acknowledge that all our resources are blessings from God. We embrace our role as responsible stewards of these resources, utilizing them wisely and generously to benefit those who are in need.
The Power of Prayer: We firmly believe in the transformative power of prayer. Prayer is not just a form of communication with God; it is the heartbeat of our ministry. We recognize that through prayer, we connect with the divine, seeking guidance, strength, and blessings for our work. We understand that our faith is not solely expressed in our actions but is deeply rooted in our communion with God through prayer. We regularly lift the needs of those we serve, as well as our own, in the belief that through prayer, we invite the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit into our mission.
An Enduring Testament: As we serve and build disciples, we aspire to create an enduring testament to faith and community. We understand that our work is for the present and future generations. By nurturing hearts to carry forward our mission, we ensure that our ministry remains a living legacy, a shining example of Christ's love, and an everlasting symbol of our faith in action.
As a Christian food ministry, we are dedicated to living out these principles in our daily service to the community. We seek to fulfill our mission with unwavering faith, compassion, and a deep commitment to those we serve, recognizing the divine image in every person we encounter.
